Abstract

Abstract Background and objectives: Mumps virus is one of the first known causative agents of meningitis in children. On-time diagnosis is the first step in treating meningitis. We aimed to evaluate Mumps virus meningitis in children in Gorgan, Iran Material and Methods: CSF and blood samples were taken from children with meningitis, Jun 2008 till Sep 2010. For 40 samples with negative bacterial culture, Extraction of viral RNA was carried out and Real-time PCR was performed for detection of Mumps virus. Demographic, clinical, biochemical and cytological data were collected. We run SPSS version 18 to analyze the data, using Chi Square (p<0.05). Results: three (7.5 %) samples have Mumps virus, two boys and one girl. All three positive cases have 0.5-1 degrees Celsius fever and vomiting but no bulging fontanel. They have not Kernig, Rodor, Brudzinski’s sign, hepatosplenomegaly, lymphadenopathy, pharyngitis and rash. ESR is higher than normal in all positive cases and CRP is positive in two cases. Protein of CSF in one case is higher than normal range. Conclusion: meningitis is an emergency condition therefore, molecular diagnostic techniques are recommended for early diagnosis and intervention. Abstract

Abstract

         Background and Objectives: Concentration low-density lipoprotein (LDL) is one of the strongest indicators of atherosclerosis and predicts the diagnosis of cardiovascular diseases. LDL measurement accuracy is very important. LDL can be measured directly, such as enzymatic and nephelometry methods or can be calculated using Friedewald's formula. Despite the development of enzymatic methods and LDL nephelometry still in most laboratories is calculated using Friedewald's formula. The aim of this study was an investigation of correlation coefficient between two methods of measuring LDL- cholesterol levels.

         Methods: This descriptive cross-sectional study, performed on the 1141 patients. Cholesterol, triglycerides, HDL, LDL all patients assayed by enzymatic method. For patients with triglyceride levels of less than 400 mg/dl had LDL levels were calculated by Friedewald's formula. Normal levels of LDL/HDL ratio of less than 3.5 were considered.

          Results: Of the 1141 patients participating in this study, 38.3 % men and 61.7 % women. The mean patient age was 46.3 ± 16.1 years. Mean serum cholesterol, triglycerides and HDL were 177.9 ± 41.1, 132.9 ± 73.2 and 45.8 ± 13.2 mg/dl, respectively. Average direct and calculated LDL concentration was 82.1 ± 23.1 and 105.5 ± 35.8, respectively. The direct measurement of LDL, LDL/HDL levels in 97.1% of cases was normal, while 85.1 % of the calculation of LDL were normal. Pearson correlation coefficients were obtained by two methods: 0.869 (p <0.001).

         Conclusion: Despite the favorable correlation between two methods of measurements of LDL, the results of a calculation method is more than direct method. This can have a negative impact on the judgment of the treating physician.

Abstract

Abstract

      Background and Objective: BabA2 and Hpa genes are involved in adherence of Helicobacter pylori (H.pylori) to gastric mucosal tissue. This study aimed to investigate the frequency of these genes in isolates of H. pylori from gastric biopsies and their relationship with gastritis, peptic ulcer and gastric cancer.

      Methods: Gastric biopsy samples were obtained from patients with gastritis, peptic ulcer and gastric cancer. A sample was sent to the laboratory for urease test and histopathology study, and another sample for DNA extraction. The frequency of BabA2 and Hpa genes was investigated using their specific primers by PCR.

      Results: Among the 80 analyzed biopsy samples, 51 (63%) were BabA2 positive, and the frequency of this gene in the samples of gastric cancer, gastritis and peptic ulcer was 61.1, 58.3 and 73.3%, respectively. In addition, 57 samples (71%) were Hpa positive, and the frequency of this gene in the samples of gastric cancer, gastritis and peptic ulcer was 55.5, 69.4 and 84.6%, respectively. There was no significant correlation between the presence of these genes and the type of H.pylori-related diseases.

       Conclusion: Frequency of BabA2 and Hpa genes is higher in the samples of peptic ulcer but there was no significant relationship between these genes and H.pylori-related diseases.

Abstract

Abstract

       Background and Objectives: Nonalcoholic fatty liver disease is the most common chronic liver disorder and is also currently considered as the hepatic manifestation of metabolic syndrome. Regular exercise training may decrease fatty liver disease complications, although its impact is not yet clear. This study aimed to evaluate the effects of six weeks of aerobic training on liver enzymes and other factors contributing to metabolic syndrome in young inactive women.

       Methods: In this quasi-experimental study, 37 inactive overweight women were randomly divided into an experimental and a control group. The experimental one participated in a controlled aerobic training program (5-minute interval walking) at 65-90% maximum heart rate for 6 weeks, 45-90 minutes per session and 4 sessions per week. Blood samples were taken following 12 hours of fasting, both before and after the training program.

       Results: The levels of aspartate aminotransferase and alkaline phosphatase decreased in both groups. Alanine aminotransferase level, weight and waist circumference were significantly decreased in the experimental group following the 6-week exercise training (P<0.05). High-density lipoprotein concentration was significantly increased in both groups. Gamma-glutamyl transferase level was decreased in the experimental group, but increased in the control group. The results showed no significant difference in the basic profile of participants, liver enzymes concentration and lipid profile between the experimental and control group.

        Conclusion: Six weeks of aerobic training may help prevent hepatic damage through decreasing serum levels of liver enzymes, anthropometric factors and some metabolic syndrome factors associated with nonalcoholic fatty liver disease.

Abstract

Abstract

     Background and Objective: Diabetes mellitus is the most common risk factor for coronary artery disease (CAD). Cholesteryl ester transfer protein (CETP) TaqIB polymorphism is associated with changes in lipid profile and may be a risk factor for CAD in patients with diabetes. This study aimed to evaluate the association of CETP TaqIB polymorphism with CAD in patients with type 2 diabetes.

     Methods: In this case-control study, 292 diabetic patients were divided into two groups based on angiography reports (150 participants with normal angiogram as the control group and 142 participants with more than 50% stenosis of at least one coronary artery as the case group). The CETP TaqIB genotypes were determined by PCR-RFLP analysis. Fasting blood glucose was measured using glucose oxidase and lipid profile (triglycerides, total cholesterol, high density lipoprotein-cholesterol and low density lipoprotein-cholesterol) by an enzymatic method.

       Results: There was no significant difference in the frequency of genotypes and alleles between the case group and controls (the control group: B1B1, 17.3%; B1B2, 63.3%; and B2B2, 19.3%; the case group: B1B1, 18.3%; B1B2, 64.1%; and B2B2, 17.6%) (P=0.92). In the control group, heterozygous participants (genotype B1B2) had higher levels of cholesterol compared with other genotypes (B1B1 and B2B2). Also, the patients with genotype B1B2 had significantly higher weight (P=0.013).

       Conclusion: There is no significant correlation between CETP TaqIB polymorphism and the increased risk of coronary artery disease in patients with type 2 diabetes.

Abstract

ABSTRACT

        Background and Objective: One of the main tasks of clinical microbiology laboratories is to determine antibiotic resistance profiles in common pathogens and ensure the selection of effective antibiotics for certain infections. The aim of this study was to compare the methods of disk diffusion, broth microdilution and modified Hodge test in Escherichia coli isolates from urinary tract infection and diarrhea for susceptibility testing against beta-lactam antibiotics in Kerman, Iran.

        Methods: In this study, 432 E. coli isolates were collected from diarrhea (216 isolates) and urinary tract infection samples (216 isolates). The antibiotic susceptibility testing methods of disk diffusion, broth microdilution and modified Hodge test were performed according to the Clinical and Laboratory Standards Institute guidelines.

      Results: The findings of disk diffusion method showed that resistance to cefotaxime, ceftazidime, aztreonam, cefepime and imipenem was 51.15%, 30.55%, 24.30%, 15.27% and 1.85%, respectively. In the disk diffusion test, 51.15% of the isolates were resistant to at least one antibiotic, all of which were later evaluated by the broth microdilution method. Moreover, 52.94%, 17.19%, 13.12% and 0.90% of the isolates were resistant to cefotaxime, ceftazidime, cefepime and imipenem, respectively. All of the isolates were evaluated for the production of carbapenemase enzyme by the modified Hodge test and none of the isolates were found as positive.

       Conclusion: This study shows that performing carbapenem tests is very challenging, and laboratories are recommended to use secondary and independent antibiotic susceptibility tests such as modified Hodge test to confirm the carbapenem-resistant results.

Abstract

ABSTRACT
        Background and objectives: Synthesis and characterization of several metal complexes (metal ions: Co2+, Ti4+ and Ce3+) of macroacyclic Schiff base ligand have been reported. The Schiff base ligand is prepared from the condensation reaction of 1, 4-di-(4-fluoro-2-aminophenoxy) butane with salicylaldehyde in ethanol. In addition, antibacterial activity of metal ions, Schiff base ligand and their complexes have been investigated. Recent studies show that many Schiff base complexes have antibacterial activity against Gram-positive and Gram-negative bacteria. Therefore, we aimed to synthesize new Schiff base complexes and evaluate their antibacterial activity against a number of Gram-positive and Gram-negative bacteria.
         Methods: Schiff base ligand and their complexes were characterized by mass spectrometry and IR, H-NMR and C-NMR spectroscopy. The in vitro antibacterial activity of the Schiff base ligand, metal ions and their complexes were evaluated against some Gram-positive and Gram-negative bacteria by disk diffusion method and determining minimum inhibitory concentration.
          Results: In this study, the Schiff base complexes had good antibacterial activity, but the Schiff base ligand and metal ions did not show any antibacterial effect. In some cases, the antibacterial effect of the complexes was higher than that of the standard antibiotics tetracycline and gentamycin. The titanium complex showed the highest antibacterial activity in both methods. This complex created the largest growth inhibition zone (diameter: 100mm) against Staphylococcus aureus, and had the lowest minimum inhibitory concentration against Bacillus subtilis (6.75 mg/ml).
          Conclusion: The compounds synthesized in our study have strong antibacterial activity.

Abstract

ABSTRACT
        Background and Objective: Mycotoxins are a group of relatively resistant toxic metabolites. The most important mycotoxins are aflatoxins (B1 and B2, G1 and G2), which originate from contaminated animal feed. Dairy cattle transmit aflatoxins B1 and B2 through milk in form of aflatoxins M1 and M2, and endanger the human health. Traditional buffalo farms play an important role in the supply of dairy products in Khuzestan Province. In addition, the province has suitable conditions for the growth of various types of fungi. Therefore, this study aimed to determine the amount of aflatoxins in buffalo feed samples collected from two main suppliers of milk in the province (Ahvaz and Karun).
         Methods: Overall, 60 samples were collected during the 3 months of autumn 2014. Samples were analyzed by the sensitive and fast method of competitive enzyme-linked immunosorbent assay.
         Results: The concentration of aflatoxin ranged from 0.77 to 64.85 μg/Kg. In addition, the concentration of aflatoxin in 21 samples was higher than the permitted limit (25 μg/Kg).
        Conclusion: The mean concentration of aflatoxin in the samples increases with the decrease in temperature and humidity. This increase is observed in Ahvaz at a higher rate, which could be due to inappropriate storage and use of rice bran in their feed.

Abstract

ABSTRACT
       Background and Objectives: Blood transfusion may induce some adverse effects on receivers. Some methods such as antibody screening and cross matching have been suggested to reduce the risk of transfusion complications. However, these methods require commercial antibody screening kits that may also need special equipment. The aim of this study was to introduce a new method for antibody screening that does not require a commercial kit, and could be used in any transfusion laboratory. 
       Methods: We examined 350 samples that contained alloantibody and 350 control samples without the antibody. A solution containing two O+ and one O- samples were used instead of screening cells.
      Results: Sensitivity and specificity of the method were 73.32% and 45.15%, respectively. Positive predictive value and negative predictive value were 58.33% and 63.88%, respectively.
       Conclusion: Our new method can be used in basic hematology laboratories with some modifications.

Abstract

 
ABSTRACT
        Background and Objectives: The aim of the present study was to investigate   the effect of six weeks of volleyball training on lipid and lipoprotein profiles of elite high school male volleyball players in the Golestan Province (Iran) during preparation season for an international championship in France.
        Methods: Training group included 12 elite volleyball players in students’ premier league and control group included 12 healthy non-athlete male students. The training group practiced at 60-85% of maximum heart rate for six weeks, 90 minutes per session, six sessions per week and three sessions a day (first session: technical practice, second session: tactical practice and third session: technical/tactical practice). Blood samples were taken after 12 hours of fasting both before and after the training.
         Results: Level of total cholesterol (TC), high-density lipoprotein-cholesterol (HDL-C), low-density lipoprotein-cholesterol (LDL-C) and LDL-C/HDL-C increased in the training group (P> 0.05). However, there was a significant difference between the two groups in TC and LDL-C levels (P<0.05). Level of triglyceride, VLDL, and TC/HDL-C reduced in the training group after six weeks of training (P> 0.05).
        Conclusion: Our results show that the six-week volleyball training during the preparation season can cause abnormalities in plasma lipid profile.

Abstract

ABSTRACT
            Background and Objectives: Acinetobacter baumannii is an opportunistic pathogen that affects different groups of people, especially intensive care unit (ICU) patients. The prevalence of infections caused by this bacterium is very high. Today, prevalence of infections caused by multidrug-resistant (MDR) and extreme-drug resistant (XDR) strains is increasing. This study aimed to determine the antibiotic susceptibility pattern of A. baumannii isolates from ICU patients.
            Methods: This cross-sectional study was conducted from October 2014 to March 2015 on patients admitted to ICU of Imam Khomeini hospital in Tehran, Iran. Clinical samples of various sources were collected from patients. Isolates were detected and identified via microbiological and biochemical tests as well as PCR amplification of the blaOxa51 gene. Then, susceptibility testing was performed using the Kirby-Bauer disk diffusion test. Statistical analysis was performed with SPSS (version 22, Chicago, IL, USA) using Chi-square and Fisher’s exact tests.
            Results: Of the total of 62 clinical samples, 24 (39%) were respiratory samples and only three (6%) were cerebrospinal fluid samples. Most MDR and XDR strains were isolated from respiratory samples. The highest resistance rate was against ceftriaxone, ticarcillin and erythromycin (100%), while the lowest resistance rate was against to minocycline (20%).
            Conclusion: Owing to detection of high multi-drug resistance isolates in the present study, and importance of multi-drug resistance in A. baumannii, the identification of multi-drug resistance genes and their reporting to health care/treatment centers is important. Thus, it is recommended to perform susceptibility testing to help determine the most effective antibiotic(s) for the treatment of infections in ICU patients.

Abstract

ABSTRACT
           Background and Objectives: Diabetes is one of the most common diseases and a major risk factor for cardiovascular disease. Studies have shown that regular exercise can affect apoptosis in cardiomyocytes. The purpose of this study was to investigate the effect of high-intensity interval training on the expression of Bcl-2 and Bax as important apoptosis factors in diabetic rats.
           Methods: After inducing diabetes in 20 male Wistar rats (weighing 250 ± 1.15 g), the rats were randomly divided into a control group and a training group. The training group performed high-intensity interval training five days a week for four weeks, and the control group did not perform any training. After the intervention, RNA was extracted and TCF mRNA was subjected to real time RT-PCR for measuring Bax and Bcl-2 expression in the heart tissue of diabetic rats. Data were analyzed by IBM SPSS Statistics V22 using independent t-test. P-values less than 0.05 were considered as statistically significant.
           Results: The expression of Bcl-2 increased significantly and the expression of Bax decreased significantly after the four-week training intervention.
           Conclusion: The high-intensity interval training can have beneficial effects on the expression of apoptotic genes in rats with type 2 diabetes.

Abstract

ABSTRACT
             Background and objectives: Utilization of essential oils instead of chemical preservatives has received significant attention in recent years. The present study aims to evaluate chemical composition and antibacterial and antioxidant properties of essential oils of Zataria multiflora, Artemisia deracunculus and Mentha piperita.
             Methods: Chemical profile of the essential oils was analyzed by gas chromatography/mass spectrometry. The microwell dilution and agar disk diffusion methods were used to evaluate the antibacterial properties of the essential oils. Total phenolic content, β-carotene-linoleic acid bleaching test and 2,2-diphenyl-1-picrylhydrazyl (DPPH) assays were carried out to determine the antioxidant properties.
             Results: Menthol (39.18%) and mentone (21.64%) were the main components of the essential oil of M. piperita, while estragol (34.75%) and limonene (15.72%) were the major components of the essential oil of A. dracunculus. The main components of the essential oil of Z. multiflora were carvacrol (36.81%) and thymol (33.04%). The essential oils of M. piperita and Z. multiflora showed greater antimicrobial effects. Moreover, Z. multiflora showed the greatest antioxidant activity among the essential oils. The total phenolic content of Z. multiflora was 228.14±0.45 mg gallic acid equivalent/g.
             Conclusion: Given their favorable antioxidant and antimicrobial properties, the essential oils of Z. multiflora, A. deracunculus and M. piperita can be used as natural food preservatives.

Abstract

ABSTRACT
             Background and Objectives: Hemoglobinopathies are characterized by defects in the synthesis of globin chains of hemoglobin (Hb). The purpose of the present study was to evaluate mutations associated with thalassemia and other hemoglobinopathies in Masjed Soleiman County, Iran.
             Methods: This descriptive study was carried out on 456 individuals suspected of having hemoglobinopathies who were referred to health centers of the Masjed Soleiman Country in 2015-2017. Blood samples were collected in EDTA tubes. Complete blood count test was performed and red blood cell indices were determined. Level of Hb variants was measured using capillary electrophoresis. Reverse dot-blot, gap-polymerase chain reaction and Sanger sequencing were carried out to detect mutations. 
             Results: We found that 17.7% of the subjects were heterozygous for β-thalassemia. Frequency of mutations 36/37 (–T), IVS-II-1 (G>A) and IVS-I-110 (G>A) in the β-globin gene was 26.7%, 22% and 16.27%, respectively. In addition, 9.5% of the subjects contained Hb S, Hb D and Hb C, while 1.1% of the subjects showed co-inheritance of an Hb variant and β-thalassemia. In subjects with α-thalassemia, the -α3.7 (57.1%), -- MED–(17.4%), -α4.2 (3.1%) and -α20.5 (1.5%) deletions were found as the most prevalent mutations.
             Conclusion: In addition to the high prevalence of β-thalassemia and HBB gene mutations, we detected variants Hb S, Hb D, Hb C and co-inheritance of an Hb variants and β-thalassemia in individuals living in the Masjed Soleiman Country. We also identified four mutations in the α-globin gene. These results can be useful for genetic counseling in this population.

Abstract

          Background and Objectives: Staphylococcus aureus is a common cause of nosocomial infections. The ability of S. aureus to form biofilm and acquire antimicrobial resistance has made this organism a major health problem. In this study, we investigate the biofilm-forming ability of S. aureus isolates from clinical samples.
          Methods: Sixty S. aureus isolates from clinical specimens were collected from the 5th Azar Hospital of Gorgan (Iran) in 2018. The isolates were identified using conventional methods including Gram staining and biochemical tests (catalase and coagulase). Biofilm formation by S. aureus isolates was evaluated using a microplate-based method.
          Results: Of 60 S. aureus isolates, 47 (78.3%) strains were identified as biofilm-forming and 13 (21.7%) strains were non-biofilm-forming.
          Conclusion: The high prevalence of biofilm-producing S. aureus isolates in the 5th Azar hospital of Gorgan could pose a major health challenge with serious consequences for hospitalized patients. Therefore, it is crucial to disinfect and sterilize hospital surfaces and equipment effectively to minimize the risk of contamination and spread of bacteria in the hospital settings.

Abstract

ABSTRACT
             Background and objectives: Esophageal cancer is the eighth most common type of cancer in the world. Considering the adverse effects of anticancer drugs and the emergence of chemotherapy resistance, plant-derived extracts and their constituents could be a valuable source of novel anticancer drugs. In this study, we investigated cytotoxic effects of Juniperus excelsa leaf extract on esophageal cancer cell line KYSE-30 and healthy fibroblast cells (HU02 cells).
             Methods: KYSE-30 cells and HU02 cells were cultured in DMEM medium. The cells were treated with different concentrations (1, 10, 100, 500 μg/ml) of the J. excelsa leaf extract for 24 and 48 hours. The cytotoxic effects of the extract were assessed using the MTT assay. Data were analyzed using SPSS (version 19) and GraphPad Prism 5.
             Results: According to results of the MTT assay, the Juniperus excelsa’s leaf extract exerted significant cytotoxic effects on esophagus cancer cell line (KYSE-30) and healthy fibroblast cells (HU02) in a time- and dose-dependent manner (P<0.05).
             Conclusion: The J. excelsa leaf extract has cytotoxic effects against KYSE-30 esophageal cancer cells while causing lesser toxicity on healthy fibroblast cells. Our findings suggest that the potential anticancer effects of this extract should be further exploited in future studies.

Abstract

ABSTRACT
           Reports have shown that lipoprotein (Lp)(a) can serve as an indicator of atherosclerosis and cardiovascular diseases. Several cardiovascular disease risk factors including age, ethnicity and type 2 diabetes mellitus have been linked to Lp(a) metabolism. Given the structural similarity between Lp(a) and plasminogen, there may be a relationship between Lp(a) level and thrombosis and atherogenesis.
In this review, we summarize the latest data about Lp(a) and related conditions on the PubMed database using the following keywords: “Lp(a) and diseases” and “Lp(a) and racial groups”. All available information was extracted and categorized according to the purpose of this study. In conclusion, evidence suggest that increased level of Lp(a) results in coronary artery disease and increases the risk of ischemic stroke. Lack of Lp(a) has no adverse effect on human health. Moreover, Lp(a) can be effective in wound healing as it degrades apolipoprotein(a) products which might have anti-tumor and anti-angiogenetic effects.

Abstract

Background and Objectives: It has been shown that low intensity physical activity rarely increases bone density or renewal. Therefore, the purpose of this study was to investigate effects of four weeks of plyometric training with and without vascular occlusion on serum levels of bone‌ alkaline phosphatase (BALP) and C-terminal telopeptide of type I collagen (CTX), as markers of bone formation and bone degeneration in inactive girls.
          Methods: This was a semi-experimental study with a pretest-posttest design. The study population consisted 36 inactive female students aged 23.84±1.096 years with a mean body mass index of 22.59±0.52 kg/m2 who were randomly divided into a plyometric training group without blood flow restriction, a plyometric training group with blood flow restriction and a control group. The experimental groups performed four weeks of plyometric training (three sessions per week), while the control group did not perform any exercise. Blood samples were obtained 48 hours before the first training session and 48 hours after the last training session. Measurement of BALP and CTX was carried out using commercial enzyme-linked immunosorbent assay kits. Collected data were analyzed using t-test and one-way analysis of variance. All statistical analyses were performed using SPSS software (version 23) and at significance level of ≤ 0.05.
          Results: The level of BALP was significantly higher in the low intensity exercise with blood flow restriction group compared to the control group (P=0.005) and the low intensity exercise group without blood flow restriction (P=0.003). The BALP/CTX ratio, as marker of bone metabolism, increased significantly following low intensity exercise with blood flow restriction compared with the other groups (P<0.05). However, low intensity exercise without blood flow restriction induced no significant change in the studied indices.
          Conclusion: Plyometric training with blood flow restriction could be as effective as high intensity training for improving bone metabolism and turnover, particularly in inactive individuals.

Abstract

Background and objectives: Atherosclerotic cardiovascular disease is the leading cause of death in industrialized countries. High level of plasma lipids including cholesterol and triglycerides is one of the most important risk factors of atherosclerosis. Previous studies have shown that three members of the ATP-binding cassette, subfamily G (ABCG4, ABCG5 and ABCG8) are involved in transporting sterols across membranes. The purpose of this study was to assess the effect of high-intensity resistance training (HIRT) and aerobic exercise (AE) on expression of the ABCG4, ABCG5 and ABCG8 genes in female athletes.
Methods: Twenty-four female athletes from the Khorasan Province (Iran) were randomly selected and assigned into three groups: control (N=8), AE (N=8) and HIRT (N=8). The subjects in the HIRT group and the AE group performed exercise at intensity of 75-80% of 1-repetion maximum and 75-80% of maximum heart rate, respectively. Blood samples were collected at baseline and immediately after the exercise session. After isolation of lymphocytes by centrifugation and purification of mRNA, gene expression changes were investigated by Real-Time-PCR. Data were analyzed using one-way ANOVA and the Tukey's test.
Results: Both training protocols significantly increased the expression of ABCG4, ABCG5 and ABCG8 in the subjects (P<0.05), and there was no significant difference in the expression of these genes between the experimental groups (P>0.05).
Conclusion: A single session of HIRT and AE may have beneficial effects on prevention of atherosclerosis.

Abstract

      Background and objectives: Leishmaniasis is a tropical disease caused by protozoan parasites from the genus Leishmania. In this study, we aimed at investigating the in vitro anti-leishmanial effect of essential oils of Rosmarinus officinalis, Mentha pulegium, Foeniculum vulgare, Lippia citriodora and Pelargonium graveolens.
       Methods: The essential oils were prepared from freshly dried and powdered plants with steam-distilled water. Iranian strain of Leishmania promastigotes was cultured in RPMI medium and the inhibitory effects of different concentrations (25, 32, 62.5, 125, 250, 500 and 1000 μg/ml) of the essential oils were investigated at 24, 48 and 72 hours. The number of live parasites before and after treatment with the essential oils was counted by trypan blue 10% staining and using neobar lam.
      Results: The essential oils significantly decreased the number of promastigotes in a dose-dependent manner (P<0.05). However, the inhibitory effects of F. vulgare and R. officinalis essential oils were more profound compared to other essential oils. Moreover, concentrations of 500 and 1000 μg/ml of these two essential oils exerted equal and more anti-leishmanial potency compared to glucantime, the first-line drug used for treatment of leishmaniasis.
       Conclusion: Based on the results, it is recommended to evaluate the in vivo anti-leishmanial effects of the tested essential oils, particularly F. vulgare and R. officinalis.
